Ultrarunning and being a parent

Since Jo and I became parents over 18 months ago I have struggled to work out where and how we can find the time to train for running ultras.

There are pros and cons to everything in life and while the pros far outweigh the cons, the one downside to sharing a love of trailrunning with your partner is finding the time to train when children come along.

The scenario we often find ourselves in is that, for good reason, we can’t both go out running at the same time, unless we go buggy running, which limits where we can go and the times we can go – little Ferdinand is an active wee boy so isn’t super-keen on a long time in his buggy.

This then means that the one who isn’t getting out running feels envious which can, in turn, lead to neither of us running as the last thing we want to do is make our partner feel sad or miffed.

So, I’m on the hunt for ultrarunning couples who also have young children to find out how they do it? When do you both run? Do you run together? What kind of training are you both putting in each week? What times of the day are you out running?

I’d love to hear from anyone who is in, or has been in, this scenario so I can find a better way to make ultrarunning more compatible with daily family life.
